What Does An Escape Room Game Master Do?

Escape rooms have become an enticing form of entertainment over the last decade, with people of all ages and backgrounds trying to solve puzzles and riddles in order to experience incredible stories and thrilling adventures.

While the success of an escape room ultimately comes down to the players and their ability to work together to solve the mystery, the Game Master plays a crucial role in ensuring that the experience is enjoyable, safe, and challenging.

The Role of a Game Master

1. Welcome to Lockdown Ottawa

First and foremost, the Game Master is responsible for introducing the players to the game, greeting and welcoming people, and helping them feel comfortable. If you’re a first-time player, a Game Master is someone who can help you understand the necessary instructions and rules.

They typically explain the game's objective and any specific details about the story or theme of the room, and any tutorials needed about how to operate the game's equipment and tools. The Game Master needs to be clear and concise in their explanations so that the players can fully understand what is expected of them.

2. Setting the Mood

Before the game, the Game Master will set up the room, making sure that all puzzles and clues are in the correct positions and to ensure that nothing malfunctions for the group. The Game Master will then bring the team into the room in character to start setting the mood and further enhance the theme of the experience.

This is where the Game Master can really have fun with the group, creating a persona and flexing their acting skills! Setting the mood and greatly improve the overall atmosphere and set a team up for a really fun experience!

3. Here to Help

The Game Master monitors the player’s progress through the Escape Room, by observing the players through video cameras or other monitoring devices, and they may communicate with the players through walkie-talkies or intercom systems. The Game Master's main job is to keep the game running smoothly and to intervene if any issues arise, such as a malfunctioning puzzle or a player breaking the rules.

One of the most important roles of the Game Master is to control the pace of the game. They need to ensure that the players are progressing through the game at an appropriate pace, while also keeping the game exciting, engaging, and most of all FUN. If the players are struggling with a puzzle, the Game Master may provide a hint to help them along. They can provide clues while still in character, to further the immersive experience.

4. Come Back Again

Finally, the Game Master is responsible for debriefing the players after the game is over. They may provide feedback on the players' performance, offer insights into how the players could have improved, and answer any questions that the players may have. It is important for the Game Master to be friendly and approachable in order to create a positive experience for the players. The Game Master may also mention the other experiences offered to help the group plan for their next Escape!
